Full HDTV And Its Types

This post talks about the haloed concept of HDTV that is a common jargon used in the commercial electronics and home entertainment arena. The concept is defined and its various types are explained with a view to simplify the complexity associated with the technology.

Sony HDTV Reviews

HDTV stands for Full High Definition TV and is also called true HD TV. The 1080p resolution offered provides many more dimensions to the picture than the traditional visual technologies. The term definition signifies that in contrast to the earlier television models, HDTVs possess higher resolutions typically around 4 times higher.

Surpassing the image quality of traditional televisions in every aspect, HDTV models can be divided into three broad categories. LCD TVs, Plasma TVs and LED TVs are the classifications with each having their own unique characteristics. The Plasma screen, right from its inception has conceived the notion that true life picture can only be reproduced by its large screen technology. The extensive array of colours provided by Plasma TVs offer life-like colours on the screen and the brightness provided is also of a very large magnitude. The screen sizes of Plasma TVs are humongous with an equally high contrast ratio of around 50000:1 or 100000:1. Extremely fast response times and refresh rates enable these TVs to reproduce fast moving images with genuine perfection. Although Plasma televisions produce better colours they are heavier and bulkier in size when compared to LCD TVs. Plasma TVs also suffer from the problems of burn-in when still images are allowed to persist on the screen for extended durations.

LCD TVs work on the technology of Liquid Crystal Display and have undergone major technological transformations resulting in an image quality that is fast approaching that of Plasma TVs. Refresh rates of the order of 240Hz and contrast ratios of around 30000:1 are a common feature among LCD TVs. They offer an ideal solution for gamers and have the options of being wall mounted or adorning table tops. LCD televisions are considerably are lighter and slimmer in comparison to any other type of televisions.

LED TVs can be categorized as a variation of LCD TVs but manufacturers in a bid to hit the market with something that’s latest and sounds trendy, brand LED TVs as a separate classification of HDTVs. The only difference is the light source that is used in the two TVs. The LCD panels are lit up using CCFL fluorescent lights while the LED TVs utilize LEDs as is evident from their name. The major advantage that this technology brings to the table is that an even wider variety of colours are made available and contrast levels are magnified even further allowing for slimmer and lighter television sets to be manufactured.
